Benefits of Cultural Diversity

Children usually begin to be aware of cultural differences around the age of 4. Differences in culture in the classroom can have a positive or negative effect on the child’s ability to learn. Not acknowledging and welcoming cultural differences can cause members of minorities in the classroom to feel inferior and isolated. Helping children understand how every person is both unique and the same promotes acceptance and respect for people who look, speak and act in unfamiliar ways.
It is important for a child to be recognized as unique while still being an integral part of the group. This inclusion encourages individuality while promoting self-confidence and self-esteem which help the child develop successful coping and learning skills. Stereotyping can be reduced by recognizing that groups are made up of people, each one being an individual. |
