Ask any educator or parent about boys and reading and the common answer you will receive is laced with frustration, exasperation, or failure. So many boys hate reading because they crave action-packed activities that pique their interest, not quiet reading time. Just because the book may be about something action-packed it doesn’t ensure success. That is what sets Goosebumps books so far apart from others when it comes to attracting all readers, but especially boys.

What is so appealing?

The cover

​Eye-catching colors and illustrations that are creepy and funny. The fun taglines and book titles allude to the contents and the covers are easily recognizable. Example: The Cuckoo Clock of Doom “Keep your eye on the birdie!”
​Peer influence
​
Goosebumps books are traded at lunch, talked about at sleepovers, and used in pretend play during recess time. It is this peer influence and interaction that is part of the Goosebumps legacy.
​Exciting content
​
Goosebumps books are action packed and hold the reader at a suspenseful place nearly the whole way through. Nearly each chapter ends in a cliffhanger that motivates the reader to continue on and on until completion. In addition to this there is the “gross-out” factor and “fear” factor in each book.
​Predictable ​plotlines
​
Each Goosebumps book follows a predictable pattern of child-appropriate horror which allows the child an opportunity to build skills in dealing with fear in a safe place. Kids love being scared and Goosebumps books are designed to be a fun way to get this thrill.
​​Humor
​
Sometimes a character in a Goosebumps book is in a scary situation and just when they get the courage to face their fears they pull the curtain back to reveal something silly or ordinary. R.L. Stine takes the reader on a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs that are humorous and interesting.
