There are numerous evaluation models that are commonly used in educational settings. Some of these are very detail-oriented and complex spanning multiple pages and concentrations. Others are more simplistic in nature and focus on common standards and developmentally appropriate practices. Chances are that you already have an evaluation and observation method in place but it doesn’t hurt to educate yourself on other options.
Keep in mind that an evaluation system can be fluid meaning that it can change to fit the needs of the current situation.
Components of a quality evaluation system:
Involves teachers and staff. It will not be an administration driven choice without teacher input and understanding.
Accommodates different teaching styles and methods. It will allow for differences between teaching methodologies.
Uses multiple means to measure. Several tools are combined to create an overall score instead of just one piece of data.
Occur over time. More than one observation or meeting is scheduled to pull data.
Discussed focus areas. Teachers and directors should have a chance to discuss a potential focus area for their evaluations and observations.
Open lines of communication. Teachers should be able to talk to their evaluator about any questions or considerations that come up.
Training and preparation. You cannot expect a teacher to perform well during an observation or to get the most out of an evaluation if they are not well-trained.
