Small group instruction can be incredibly helpful for students and teachers. Though it is helpful, it is most beneficial when done correctly and planned well. Teachers must take in to consideration student ability levels and design the group activities to support those. They must also give students equal opportunities to get teacher-lead instruction time as well as independent work time and group activity time.
Homogeneous Groups
Homogeneous groups consist of students whose ability levels are very similar. Grouping students by ability level has its benefits and drawbacks. Homogeneous groups can be beneficial for certain tasks and focus groups, but should not be the only means of grouping students. |
