When you design or implement a literacy center there are numerous things to take into consideration. Centers are often designed as part of a rotation or free choice options every day in an early childhood classroom. After the distinction is made for the method in which children will get to their centers (assigned or free choice) it is time to create the centers.
Literacy centers should contain activities that are engaging and interesting and also on topic for whatever literacy concepts are currently in practice. When creating the center it is important for all items to be independently completed and accessible for all children in the class. Often materials are placed in baskets, bins, or on trays to make them easier to use and move. |

After the literacy center activities are decided and materials are combined to make specific lessons or activities, it is important to introduce them to the class. An effective introduction strategy will include a demonstration of where the materials are, how to use them, and how to put them back in their place.
Often teachers will introduce the activities to small groups as opposed to the entire class at once. This decision should be made based upon what works best for the group in question. |
Next, literacy center expectations should be modeled and practiced. Teachers should model the expectations for each center and activity within the center and then they should encourage and support the similar use of these centers. Children may need multiple experiences with the activities and centers to cement their routines and good habits. This is completely acceptable and should probably be expected.

Modeling and practicing are not nearly as effective if not combined with a review of the activities. At least while the centers and their activities are new to the group, the review and practice is very necessary. Be sure to review what to do and how to do it and not focus on the negative aspects of any misbehavior or misuse that may have occurred.
