Earthworks: Art and Nature

Developing a Nature Art Lesson Plan


When creating an art and nature lesson plan for young children there are generally 6 main parts:

1. Name

It does not need to be cute or catchy, but it should explain the lesson plan to some extent.

2. Age of Group

The lesson and its components must be developmentally appropriate for young children. Consider their physical and cognitive abilities as well as any exceptionalities within your group.

3. Objective

​Are you trying to expose a preschool child to patterns in nature? Are you trying to help them respect nature and its elements? Is the objective to create a new art method with natural materials?

4. CDA Competency Standard

​Now that you have decided your objective, you must align it with a CDA Competency Standard for preschool children. The CDA Competency Standards book is available through the CDA Council’s website at www.cdacouncil.org.

Note: your center may be using different standards, be sure to use the correct ones.

5. Materials and Procedure

​The next step is to list your materials and procedure keeping in mind any pre-activity or extension options. 

6. Assessment

​The assessment does not need to be extensive, but instead must meet the criteria of judging whether or not the student met the objective and standard originally set. The assessment should usually be recorded somewhere as well.
