10 Month Old Jude

Jude is 10 months old and is playing with big foam blocks in the infant classroom. He is picking blocks up and stacking them two at a time. He notices a group of several blocks that are different shapes, so he crawls to them. Upon his arrival he sits and picks the blocks up one at a time to investigate them. He stacks two of them and then tries to stack two more but quickly learns that they do not stack as well as he had hoped. He returns to the first set of blocks and continues playing. His teacher brings the other group of blocks near so that he can try using them together.

1) How does Jude’s teacher support STEM in his block play?

​2) If she did not bring the blocks over would his play still support STEM?

In both situations the teacher is supporting the STEM. Jude is exploring with the big foam blocks. He is picking them up and stacking them. The new blocks are of different shapes and he is trying to problem solved but finds they don't stack as the others. So he goes back to the others, but his teacher inagrates the different shape blocks for him to have more of a choice.

1.) The teacher is supporting STEM by allowing the child to examine and explore the different blocks. With the different blocks it allows the child to count, stack, and investigate the different materials.
2.) Yes, it would still be using STEM.

She encouraged her student to continue investigating all the blocks by bringing over more to him after leaving the second group. If she had not done that, his block play would still be STEM because he would continue to play with them, investigate what he could do with the blocks.

The teacher is supporting the STEM in his block play by enriching the area with different types of blocks..He is exploring them his own way .She isn't forcing him to play with the other blocks but is presenting the options. She lets him make the choices..it is good that she was attentive to what he was doing so she could interact the way she did..I think he would have explored it on his own tho...

problem solving, persistence, object permeance. the teacher is helping him see the difference and giving opportunity to further explore. If she didn't bring the other blocks he would have continued to explore the first set of blocks

She is still using STEM because he can learn from the big foam blocks. He can explore their shapes and textures and try to build structures.

When the child goes back to the original two blocks, the teacher adds the other blocks so the child would have more options

Yes the teacher is supporting stem by having various shapes and sizes of blocks but I believe stem would have been supported even if she hadn't moved the other group closer

Obviously STEM is supported through block play. The teacher is scaffolding learning by introducing other blocks if the child uses them or not the child is aware of them.

Yes, the teacher is supporting STEM play by just providing the blocks for the child to explore. By bringing the other blocks over and combining them with the ones he was already playing with, she just presented an opportunity for him to integrate the blocks and see how they work together. It is the child's choice if he wanted to try them.

The child was allowed to make his own identifying observations. The 2nd group of blocks did not fit his hypothesis, so he made the decision to use only the 1st set of blocks. The Teacher enhanced the child's STEM process by encouraging another try with the blocks. STEM was supported because the teacher did not steal the learning process by demonstrating what to do. The teacher encouraged problem solving and critical thinking.

1) How does Jude’s teacher support STEM in his block play?
​Jude's teacher is encouraging Jude to find a solution and another way to use the second set of blocks that will work and stack the way he hypothesizes. Its also teaching him that persistence is key to finding a solution.

​2) If she did not bring the blocks over would his play still support STEM?
Yes, Jude is still exploring blocks by stacking and sorting. Jude will still encounter trial and error while creating thus encouraging him to continue to problem solve.

1) She encourages exploration of different blocks, and problem solving of blocks that don't stack as well as previous blocks stacked. Then she further encourages this by mixing the two block types together.

Teacher encouraged the play with block and hense STEM learnig process. She observed what her student is doing and how she face other expiriences. No matter if she put the other set of block near to her student, form the beginning, she is estimulating STEM in the infant.

The teacher is helping to support this form of development by providing Jude with different shapes of blocks for building. Combining the less stackable ones with the first allows Jude to problem solve.
Even without moving the blocks, they are still there for Jude to play with, so the skills are still being developed. He made the choice of the two sets to work with one that he found to be easier to stack and play with.

Jude's teacher supported STEM learning by bringing the other blocks that did not stack up over to Jude to allow to play with them if he wanted to. Also, using the other blocks that he previously played with is still engaging in STEM activities.

Both the child playing by himself and the teacher bringing in new blocks support STEM. She noticed he could use a challenge with new blocks to explore. When she brought the new ones over it allowed him to try to stack blocks differently. If he can’t figure it out he can go back to interact with the other ones. He is problem solving and using persistence to reach a goal.

Judes teacher supports STEM through his block play by providing him with the tools to explore, learn and create. He is able to problem solve with the different sizes of blocks, as well as feel and see the difference is size and shape. And yes Judes play would still support STEM had she not brought the other blocks over. He still has the opportunity to problem slove and use his senses to explore with the one size of blocks.

The teacher provides several different shaped blocks, some that stack well and others that don't, within reach of the child who can explore or go back and forth between them. In this case the teacher brought all the blocks together.

The child had access to the other shaped blocks and took an interest in them, even though he didn't initially find the result he wanted.
