24 Month Old Shavante

24 month old Shavante is putting blocks into a basket and taking them back out. She puts big blocks together and leaves smaller blocks out. Her teacher provides her with a smaller basket for the smaller blocks and invites Shavante to put the small blocks inside of it. Her teacher encourages her and asks her to switch baskets next time. When the big blocks cannot all fit in the smaller basket the teacher asks Shavante if they can fit and how she can make them fit. Shavante tries to make them fit by arranging them differently but still cannot make it work. She goes back to putting the big blocks in the big basket and small blocks in the small basket.

1) What was the main concept that Shavante was exploring during her block play?

2) How did her teacher help support it?

1. Shavante is learning about sequencing. When she sorts the blocks into her categories she is learning about what things go together, and she is learning how to classify categories.
2. Her teacher supports her by asking questions about the blocks and scaffolding her to try to rearrange them into a new way.

Shavante was learning about sorting, sizes, and problem solving by comparing the big and little blocks and big and little baskets. Her teacher encouraged her to incorporate a new size of basket to try with her different sized blocks. Eventually, Shavante realized the big blocks did not fit well in the small basket and ended up placing the big blocks in the big basket and the small blocks in the small basket.

She learns about sorting and problem solving by identifying the differences in the objects in order to help her understand how to make them fit nicely together.
Her teacher is allowing her to understand that in some cases an object might be great to use for one problem, but may not be the correct answer for other problems and thus she needs to use sorting to help her classify which objects she needs to solver her problem.
