Reflect on Erickson’s theory as you observe teachers and children.

1) Why are Erikson’s stages of social and emotional development important for an early care and education teacher?

2) How will you apply your knowledge in working with children in your age group?

We are social beings, and what Erickson teaches us, is the importance of this on each stage. In the end we all want kids to feel confidant and be independent, but this cant be if we don't take into consideration that there are stages and need specific for each stage in life.

1) Erikson's stages are important in ECE because they inform us what stages or milestones (mentally) that children are going through in their different age groups. As ECE professionals we can use that knowledge to help us in our classrooms.
2) I work with toddlers and it is really important for me to understand that stage. I will use that knowledge to try and incorporate more activities and tasks that my toddlers can help me with, to help build that autonomy. And when they don't do the task correctly, or make a mistake, I will not shame them.

1.) Erikson's work is important for ECE teachers because it can help guide us in our interactions with young children as well as in creating appropriate learning environments and materials to meet the challenges of each developmental stage. If children's social-emotional needs are not met in each level, it will have detrimental effects on their abilities in and attitudes towards learning.

2.) I currently work with 2 and 3 year olds, so I can apply Erikson's theory by focusing developmental goals on building a healthy sense of autonomy and self-efficacy rather than creating a sense of shame. In our classroom, we try to guide children to do as much as they can for themselves rather than doing it for them or reacting negatively when they still need help.

The theories of Erikson are helpful in child development because they can help teachers and care givers build relationships with children, and help children build relationships with each other by using appropriate learning environments and giving them opportunities for autonomy.
As a preschool teacher I can apply this knowledge by giving my children ample free play time and materials to allow them to discover on their own and build on their relationships.

This allows care givers and teachers to provide the right care and nurturing for the appropriate age so that the child establishes trust and a positive foundation for education.
For the 3-6 year rang I teach, I'll refresh montessori principles of respecting the child and allowing the child to make and learn from mistakes in a supportive environment.

Erikson's theory is important because it helps teachers get a understanding of what stages a child is at and what that child needs to have a good teacher-student relationship. It also will help teacher know how to teach a child in each stage. I'm working with 4-5 years old children. Erickson's observations and analysis are become an important tool in recognizing both stages in which certain cognition comes on line and how to most proactively respond to the development by placing most focus on positive attention to these areas while also increasing awareness as to how demonstrated behavior and environmental factors might negatively influence outcome, effectively providing a system for checks and balances. In my practice I will seek to use this information to modify my interactions appropriately based on the age range of the group and individual I'm interacting with.

2) As a preschool teacher, I should be encouraging initiative in my students. I should create an environment in which the children can independently find challenges and rise to meet them. My job during their self-discovery is to ensure that failures and missteps are viewed without blame and are seen by the child as an opportunity to grow and learn.
