By having a better understanding of a child's development, we can provide the necessary tools to create a safe space for the child to learn and grow, and develop in a way that is best fit for them. As early childhood professionals it is a part of our job to provide an environment that allows all of the children in our care to grow and develop. It is important to remember that adults need to learn and develop as well to provide the right type of care for each child we work with.

Understanding a child's development can improve teaching and caring for that child because it allows you to know what sort of things they need to grow, learn and develop. It also helps you know how to respond to the child and redirect the child if needed. There isn't a "one size fits all" when it comes to teaching and caring for young children so understanding each child's development helps you to implement individualized plans so that each child is getting what they need for the optimum chance of success in the classroom.

Understanding a child's developmental stage is extremely important when trying to teach a child. Knowing what is age appropriate to expect from a child is that developmental stage will guide on how to take care of the child. Each stage brings new skills. When you understand development as a caregiver, supervisor, it is much easier to deal with tantrums or problems that might arise, depending on how much you know about the child and how much you know about development, it will be significantly easier to solve problems. Since each child develops at a different rate, in order to help them grow up well it is important to try to identify what they need to succeed. Some children have for instance feisty or spirited temperaments that may make transition difficult for them. In this case and for most children it is good to then warn them ahead of time before changing activities. Additionally spending longer amounts of time when needed on activities that they seem well engaged in may be worthwhile as well.

Understanding child development will be significantly helpful in caring/teaching the child because it will give the parent or teacher greater patience, ideas of what tools will better help the child, and awareness in observation of the child's temperament. Applying that to individual children with different quirks and progress in the developmental milestones, the adult will now know how to best help that kiddo.
