It's important to be knowledgeable to children's temperaments because we have to learn how to react and interact with each child as an individual. Each child brings their own personality or temperament to childcare so we have to pay attention to know how they interact with each other as well. Your day to day routines depend on it if you want to have a harmonious classroom :)

Being knowledgeable about the temperament types is important so that you can help each individual child to grow and develop in a way that is successful for them. For example, the jumping off the steps exercise in the video. For a more shy, less risk taking child, I may have put a lower step for them to begin with to help them to develop their confidence first.

By knowing and understanding a child's temperament a caregiver can work with the child easier in the classroom. The caregiver would know what the child will tolerate and possibly for how long and the caregiver could also find activities that the child would respond well to. Calming a child or defusing potentially volatile situations would be far easier by understanding a childs temperament as well.

I think it is important to be knowledgeable of different temperament
types because I will not always know what child I will work with in the future. After a little bit of observation of a child it should be possible to recognize a temperament type. That way I can help the new child adjust safely. Once the child feels safe in a group of children and with me it will be easier to engage children in a lesson plan that is appropriate.

Every child's temperament is different. It helps us understand their different behaviors and acknowledge that some may be more challenging but that is all subjective, and that there is no good or bad temperament, just environments and temperaments not meshing well. It also helps to understand how to engage with a child in a way that makes them feel safe and loved, and to meet that individual child's needs.
