Get Hank to the other Bank
Age Group: School-age
* Lesson plan objective and assessment can be adapted to use this activity with
Preschool children.

Materials:
  • Assorted materials such as paperclips, straws, tape, toilet paper tubes, cotton balls, balloons, string, cardboard boxes, popsicle sticks, paper, etc.
  • An action figure sized toy (animal, monster, etc., to be “Hank”)
  • One shoe-sized plastic storage bin filled half way with water per team
  • Paper and pencils for all team members
  • Rulers or yardsticks

Objectives:  
  • Students will be able to work with teammates to analyze, construct, and apply a method of getting Hank to the other river bank.

Washington State Common Core Standard:
•    EALR 3 Solving Problems
Big Idea: Application
Core Content: Solving Problems
Grades 2-3: Develop a solution to a problem by using a simplified technological design process. Investigate the use of tools.

Anticipatory Set:
Begin by introducing “Hank” to the class. Tell the students that Hank needs to cross the “river” and get to the other riverbank, and he’s asking your class for help. 

The rules are:
  • Hank cannot touch the water!
  • Hank needs help moving, but cannot be touched by a human.

Procedure:
  1. Divide the class into teams of 4 students.
  2. Each team is given 5 minutes to discuss and sketch a design plan for their solution to get Hank to the other bank.
  3. Next, students must work together to use the assorted materials to build their designs.
  4. When all teams are finished, they must all take a turn trying to get Hank to the other bank using their designs.

Assessment:
  • Observe and record the use of prior knowledge in various subjects such as math and science.
  • Observe and record communication strategies and note conflicts, resolutions, and other collaborations challenges and strengths within teams.
