Gardening 101

When planning your garden the first step is to plot out your garden. Choose a spot that gets adequate sunlight (at least 6 hours per day). You will want to avoid areas that collect large puddles of water, as this may result in some of your plants drowning. You will then want to prepare the soil. If students are capable, have them assist you in turning the earth. If desired, you can cover the soil with straw to prevent weeds. This will also help with mud being tracked into your classroom. Schedule time for students to alternate pulling weeds and watering 2-3 times per week depending on your plants.

Types of Flower
Before you begin your garden,
it is important to research the different life spans of flowers, as not all of them are the same. There are 3 categories to be aware of when purchasing flowers:
  • Annual – Just like the name suggests, these plants have a life cycle of one year.
  • Perennials – Flowers that return year after year. Usually parts of these plants will die off in the winter but regrows in the spring from the same root system.
  • Biennials - Live for two growing seasons

Consider this information when planning your garden. Some flowers you may want around for years, while others you may want to start fresh with every year.


Equipment and Tools
It is important for each child to have their own set of tools to use when gardening. Not only will this teach them accountability, it will get them excited to begin working in the garden. Students preschool-age and older should be provided with child-sized gloves, a watering can, a small hand-held rake, and an appropriate sized shovel. Before giving students these tools, be sure to show them how to use them appropriately by modeling.

Keeping Your Students Safe
  • If you are using any fertilizers or chemicals, be sure to keep them out of reach. Do not spray these when any children are around.
  • Make sure that you are providing shade and sunscreen for your students to prevent sunburns.
  • Always monitor children as they are working in the garden. Watch to make sure they are not putting anything in their mouths (besides maybe the occasional fruit or vegetable).
  • Never leave buckets of water around infants or toddlers.
  • Put a secure fence around your garden. Students should only have access to the garden when you are present.
  • Be aware of any allergies your students may have.
