Back-to-School Transition Tools for the Early Childhood Teacher

Getting to Know Your Student
A top priority for teachers during the first few weeks should be getting to know students. It is critical that you develop a meaningful relationship with every child in your care.

As you get to know their likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses, you will be better able to help them emotionally and as a result, academically.

Here are some suggestions for developing connections with your students:   
​Greet each student every day when they come into the classroom.  
Small actions like these let them know that you see and care about them.
Actively listen to what they say.
​
It’s easy to tune out students when you are trying to get something else done, especially when they have already told you a story a million times before. Try and think of it from their perspective. What they have to say in that moment is so important to them. Take the time to stop what you are doing and actually listen. This means maintaining eye contact, asking questions, and genuinely caring about what they have to share.
Keep trying. 
Not every student will be quick to open up to you. Relationships take time and patience.
Join in play and games with them. 
Get down on the floor. Use silly voices. Have fun with your kids!
Get to know their culture. 
Every culture has different values, mannerisms, and beliefs. These will of course play a part in the child’s personality.
Share about yourself.
Relationships are a two-way street. Open up to your students about what is going on in your life.
Give them compliments.
Children with good self-esteem feel valued and will have the confidence to develop healthy relationships. 

​As your relationships with students grow stronger over the coming weeks, you will begin to see how it affects their behavior. Many behavior issues stem from not connecting with the child. On the flip side, positive relationships between students and teachers can make a world of difference.
