Interpretations


Classic pieces of children’s literature are enjoyed by people of all ages. Many will read a story as a child and then pick it up again during different points in their lives. When The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is read by a child they see magic, beauty, danger, and friendship. When a teen reads this book he or she may see exactly what their history or literature teacher wants them to see. When an adult reads The Wonderful Wizard of Oz they usually see something that resembles a piece of their lives or a memory. The way the tale is interpreted is one reason for its timeless appeal.

L. Frank Baum has gone on record multiple times assuring the public that The Wonderful Wizard of OZ was written purely as entertainment for young children. Decades after the book was released, countless theories of parallel meanings came to light. Some believed the wizard represented President William McKinley and others believed the tin woodsman represented factory owners. Still, scholars held that the entire tale was an allegory for varying belief systems or social movements. These were all a result of different interpretations by different people at different times. Many contend that Baum was simply creating a fictional world intended only to entertain children but others will argue multiple allegories and veiled intentions.

Who’s the Judge?
As children read The Wonderful Wizard of Oz they are interpreting each part of the tale in whatever way they wish. Some may take it at face value as a girl trying to get back home while making friends along the way. Others may see the journey of The Lion, The Scarecrow, and The Tin Woodsman as they change. Others still will think it is boring and will prefer to read comic books. At the end of the day it is the reader that gets to judge the meaning and interpretation of the work as well as the quality. This is perhaps the crowning benefit of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
