STEM is an acronym that stands for science, technology, engineering, and math, respectively. In recent years, many school districts and teachers have begun focusing their efforts in the domains included in STEM instruction. The purpose of STEM is to connect real-world applications to those domains and begin teaching at an early grade for students to have maximum exposure time with these important subjects. STEM also strives to create a united curriculum to be used in classrooms nationwide.
Similar to many hot-button topics in education, there are two sides to the STEM coin. Some teachers believe that STEM instruction is critical to advance their students in the direction of becoming effective adults and global citizens, while others believe that STEM is just a fancy word for the newest fad in the education system. While everyone is entitled to their opinion, all parties seem to agree that the components of STEM curriculum are critical to the education of their students.
