Children will create inukshuk Inuit rock statues
Source: Style at Home
CDA Competency Standard: II.9.2a A non-biased environment is provided. a) Encourages children’s self-help/self-regulation skills while being respectful of family preferences and cultural differences
Familiarize children with the inukshuk from Native American Inuit culture. The inukshuk is used to signal that a person is on the right path, or going the right way. This meaning is literal and metaphorical.
Take the class on a nature field trip. Encourage children to stack rocks in the form of an inukshuk or similar form. Children will find that some rocks do not stack very well therefore they will need to try different shaped rocks or different methods of stacking them. Try not to hover or help children. Instead allow them the independence and experience of solving the problem on their own.
Take photos and listen to children explain their inukshuk statues as well as the process of creating them.
Observe and record children’s independence in this activity. Did the children need little guidance or a lot? How might everyday interactions support continued independence?
Times shown are Pacific Standard Time. If you are in Central or Eastern Time, you will need to adjust the time accordingly.
