Build a Story Tower

Age Group: School-age​ (grade 4)

Objectives:
  • Students will explain the events of a story in detail by building a tower

Washington State Common Core Standard:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.3
Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., a character's thoughts, words, or actions).

Materials: 
  • A Goosebumps book
  • Notecards
  • Markers
  • Scissors

Procedure: 
  1. Students will read a Goosebumps book of their choosing. Other books may be used but Goosebumps books create very clear characters, settings, and sequence of events.
  2. Next, students choose to build a story tower with either characters, setting, or events from the Goosebumps book that they have read.
  3. They will write and draw their information on note cards using a new notecard for each new "scene" of the book using specific details from the text. 
  4. Students will cut two slits on the bottom of each notecard that are approximately 1/2" long (please see photo #2 below). 
  5. Next, stack the cards according to where the slits are to make a story tower.

Assessment: 
  • When the towers are complete have students go around the room and do a gallery walk, admiring the work of their peers. This is when the teacher should go around and assess the story event towers using a 1-4 scale. 

Differentiation:
  • Differentiate for students with limited writing or language by letting them draw pictures with captions or labels.
  • Students with motor difficulties may need to dictate the words and have an adult write them on the cards and cut them to be stacked.
  • Students with lower reading levels may use picture books as opposed to Goosebumps books.
