Hop on Pop Sight Word Jump

Age Group: Preschool
* Lesson plan objectives and assessment can be adapted to use this activity with school-age children.

Objectives:
  • Student will develop the gross motor skills of jumping and balancing
  • Student will practice common sight words

CDA Competency Standard:   II.4.4b
  • Candidate’s facilitate promotes children’s physical development.
o   b) Guides the development of children’s fine and gross motor skills

Materials: 
  • Hop on Pop by Dr. Seuss
  • yellow paper
  • black marker
  • contact paper

Procedure: 
  1. Prepare for the activity by creating the paper sight or “popcorn” words. 
  2. Use the contact paper to stick the words to the floor.
  3. Read Hop on Pop with your students. 
  4. Encourage students to practice saying the popcorn words as they jump. 
  5. You can rotate the different sight words as the weeks progress.

Assessment: 
Observe and record the student’s gross motor skills. Were they able to jump from sight word to sight word while saying the word orally? What words did they struggle with? Be sure to review these with them. 

Resource:
Sight words, also referred to as “high-frequency words” should be able to be recognized on sight. They are some of the most used words in the English language and are fundamental in reading.
