Lesson Plan Example

Applying What You Have Learned
​On the following pages are lesson plans that can be used to incorporate Harry Potter books into your program planning.  The lesson plans are intended to be an optional resource that you may adapt for use in your classroom.  The worksheets at the bottom of each lesson plan are part of the required coursework (not optional). 

Please read each lesson plan carefully and then answer the short-answer question at the bottom of the page.

Lesson Plan: Invisible Ink

Age Group: School-Age

Objectives:
  • Student will write about their favorite character in Harry Potter using at least one linking word

Common Core Writing Standard:
Grade 2
Text Types and Purposes:
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.2.1
Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section.

Materials: 
  • Lime juice
  • Q-tips
  • Paper
  • Oven
  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling

Procedure: 
  1. As you read Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets with your students, have a discussion about character traits.
  2. Ask students to write an opinion piece on which character is their favorite and why. Students will be required to use at least one of the linking words that you have been working on as a class.
  3. When finished, students can draw their character using the Q-tips and lime juice on white paper. Their drawings will be “invisible”, similar to what happens in Tom Riddle’s diary in the story.
  4. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees. Place the drawings made of “invisible ink” in the oven for about 2 minutes. The child’s drawing will appear like magic!  

Assessment: 
  • Assess whether or not the student successfully used at least one linking word in their writing.
