Small Motor Skills
Small or fine motor skills refer to the smaller movements of the body. Fine motor activities usually involve the development of the hands, feet, fingers, and tongue. Simple tasks such as gripping and picking up small objects to more complicated tasks such as writing or zipping up a coat are all fine motor skills. It is crucial that teachers consider fine motor skills when planning their curriculum, as these skills will be needed in everyday life as they grow up.

* Lesson plan objectives and assessment can be adapted to use this activity with school-age children.

Objectives:
  • Student will develop fine motor skills by threading beads
  • Student will connect literature with the arts

CDA Competency Standard:   II.4.2a
  • Activities and materials encourage children of varying abilities to develop their small muscles.
o   a) Individual fine motor skills are encouraged through a variety of developmentally appropriate materials and activities

Materials: 
  • Pipe cleaners
  • beads
  • hot glue gun
  • Horton Hears a Who! by Dr. Seuss

Procedure: 
  1. Prep for the lesson by creating the Truffula trees that the students will thread. Hot glue the pop pom onto the end of a pipe cleaner. You will need at least one of these per child. 
  2. Read Horton Hears a Who! with your students. Stop periodically and discuss the importance of respect and working together as the concepts get brought up in the story. This lesson can be used at the beginning of the year during your community building. 
  3. Encourage students to create their own Truffula tree by threading beads. 

Assessment: 
Students will demonstrate fine motor skills while threading beads.  Observe and record the student’s fine motor skills during the activity. Also, be sure to record any comments they make during your discussion of the book.
