"Since there are nine books about the same family is there one I should start with first and go in order?"
-Tena Not necessarily. Each book about the Logan family works well as a stand-alone or as part of a series. You may want to decide instead whether or not you're planning to use more than one book in your program and fit them in the way that seems best for your purposes. Are you reading them back to back? Is there a certain theme in one that you are planning for Fall curriculum and another concept in one that fits with your Spring curriculum? Think along these lines when making your decision.

"I have read Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry before and remember there being some very racist things in the book. Are you sure this is a good idea?"
-Sharkeisha Mildred D. Taylor books are set in the Deep South during a period of time where racial tensions were high and interactions between all types of people were challenging. Taylor doesn't include language, themes, and events in her books for shock factor. Instead she is writing historical fiction and these things were very common back then. If the book is taken in context it is difficult to understand how there could be a problem. Explain this to your students and be available for conversations with them.
