Earthworks: Art and Nature

Nature - That's Pretty Neat!


We are all a part of nature.

We come from it, live in it, eat it, breathe it and crave its elements. It is only fitting to expose children from a very young age to the natural elements all around them. Nature can refer to any environment that includes elements such as water, rocks, trees, or plants. Nature includes elements that can be brought inside for further exploration or discovery.

There is increasing evidence that children are quickly losing connections with nature in favor for electronic devices. The Western Australian Department of Sport and Recreation suggests that exposure to nature “has been associated with a number of health benefits for children, such as improved cognitive function, increased creativity, improved interaction with adults, reduced attention deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms and reduced rates of aggression (Nature Play WA Inc., N.D.).”

It’s easy to see why some schools even design their entire curriculum around natural elements. Montessori, Waldorf and Reggio schools are well known for their focus on natural outdoor elements, often combining much of their academics with nature when possible.  
In many regions of the world there are increased mandates for nature exposure in education. In Singapore, for example, current educational recommendations are pushing for a major increase in outdoor education. Professor Marjory Ebbeck, who is a leader at the Centre for Research and Best Practices at NTUC’s Seed Institute, explains that “outdoor activities need to match the age and developmental level of the child.” When this criteria is met, it opens up a wealth of activities for children to learn and experience in nature.

​Professor Ebbeck also contends that outdoor education can create memorable learning experiences, increase attention spans, build upon collaborative skills, and foster creativity and independence.

Some potential benefits of exposing children to nature on a regular basis:
  • Decrease in social and behavioral issues
  • Reduces fatigue and provides a mental “reset” opportunity
  • Potentially decreases the likelihood of childhood obesity
  • Reduction in stress and anxiety
  • Helps to build gross motor and fine motor skills
  • Increases positive self-concept
  • Added awareness of personal responsibility and self-discipline
  • Increased cognitive functioning
