We are all a part of nature.
We come from it, live in it, eat it, breathe it and crave its elements. It is only fitting to expose children from a very young age to the natural elements all around them. Nature can refer to any environment that includes elements such as water, rocks, trees, or plants. Nature includes elements that can be brought inside for further exploration or discovery. |
There is increasing evidence that children are quickly losing connections with nature in favor for electronic devices. The Western Australian Department of Sport and Recreation suggests that exposure to nature “has been associated with a number of health benefits for children, such as improved cognitive function, increased creativity, improved interaction with adults, reduced attention deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms and reduced rates of aggression (Nature Play WA Inc., N.D.).”
It’s easy to see why some schools even design their entire curriculum around natural elements. Montessori, Waldorf and Reggio schools are well known for their focus on natural outdoor elements, often combining much of their academics with nature when possible. |
