Objectives:

  • Children will develop their musical abilities
CDA Competency Standard:
III.7.2a
  • Activities and materials encourage children to dance, move and develop their musical abilities.
a. Music and dance/movement materials and activities are available for children daily
Materials:  
  • Percussion materials (drum sticks, drums, hands, feet, etc.)
Procedure: 
  • Drum circle is a great way to teach and incorporate rhythm in the day. Drumming can be done with any percussion instrument, and if none are available hands patting legs works just as well. Or, if students are sitting at tables this is a great activity to keep their attention while they wait for the next activity.
  • Have a teacher lead the drum circle by simply beginning a beat and encouraging children to follow along. Do this often and change the beat and rhythm as children’s ability levels develop further.
Extension:
  • This activity can be scheduled at the beginning of the day, at the end of the day, or mid-day to help with transitions. For instance, clean-up and prepare for the next activity. One teacher opens up drum circle and as children finish one activity they join the circle. Then when the next activity is ready, such as lunch or going outside, the children are already together and ready to move as a group.

  • Observe and record children’s participation and development of their musical abilities.
