Learning Outcomes

Course Overview
​​(2 hours) Online Self-Paced – Open Enrollment * For most, some of our earliest memories can be centered around picture books. These are books that place illustrations in the same regard as the text in them.  In this course, we will take a look at the value of picture books for all ages and different ways to include them in your program. Lesson plans that you can use to accompany the picture books you are reading will be included as well.

Objectives: 
  • Analyze the relationship between words and pictures in picture books and how it impacts children’s learning
  • Describe how to introduce picture books to infants and toddlers that may not have experienced reading
  • Explain in terms of literacy development how picture books can benefit preschoolers
  • Describe elements of different picture books that make them appealing to children
  • Explore various read-aloud techniques

Meet the Trainer for this Course ​​​​​

Erika Booth, BA Ed
Erika Geelhoed-Booth is originally from western Colorado and graduated with a BA in Elementary Education from Colorado Mesa University. She has volunteered in many classrooms, taught Sunday school, and has been an adult literacy tutor. Shortly after graduating college, she moved to Washington to begin teaching full-time in a Kindergarten classroom.  In her free time, she enjoys trying anything adventurous or outdoorsy such as camping, rafting, and ice climbing. She also loves curling up with a good book and playing with her Cocker Spaniel, Charlie. She looks forward to having little ones of her own one day. Erika believes that children are born with all the curiosity that they will ever need, and that it is our job as teachers to show them what to do with it.  
Erika was previously a  full time Education Resource Coordinator at Successful Solutions Training in Child Development. Erika has returned to teaching in the classroom, however we continue to appreciate her contribution of the many courses that she developed while working at Successful Solutions.​​
