Learning Outcomes

Course Overview
Playdough, slime, gak, flubber. Call it what you will, playdough and similar materials are a staple ingredient in programs everywhere. Having dough of some sort available to children gives them plenty of opportunities for creative open-ended sensory play, but that’s not all! This course will help child care professionals and educators use playdough in new ways to expand and develop their program. Recipes, extensions, and new connections will be made for children birth to school-age. 
**  A special thank you to Aurora Tollestrup, BS Ed for developing the curriculum for this course. **

  • Washington STARS credit:  Curriculum and Learning Environment (5 Hours)​ and Program Planning and Development (5 Hours)
  • CDA Content Area:  Effective Program Operation  (10 Hours)
Course Objectives:​​
  • Identify developmentally appropriate practices for playdough use
  • Explain the potential uses for playdough in the following areas:
    • social and emotional development
    • literacy
    • language development
    • math and science skills
    • physical development
    • creative expression
    • special needs
    • stress and anxiety
  • Analyze lesson plan examples for the use of playdough
  • Discuss new ways to use playdough and similar materials
  • Analyze different playdough recipes for potential uses and appropriate groups
  • Discuss math development and playdough play
  • Examine videos of playdough use in child care programs for supportive language and interaction

Meet the Trainer for this Course ​​

​Aurora Tollestrup graduated from Grand Canyon University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and a minor in English. She has worked with children and families from preschool to seventh grade in public and private schools in her community as a teacher, advocate and volunteer. A strong community connection and working relationships with colleagues influenced her teaching practices and continue to inspire her work in Education. She believes that educators with a passion for the success and wellbeing of the children they work with need tremendous support and that is where her motivation comes from. ​​
Aurora is the Coordinator of Online Learning and Instructional Technology with Successful Solutions Training in Child Development.
