“How often should I be giving praise to my students? I don’t want to do it too often.”
– Mary This is an important concern that many educators and parents have. Giving praise is an important part of fostering development and typically comes naturally. If a child is having problem behavior then praise becomes even more important in order to teach them right from wrong, or what is expected of them. When trying to alter behavior, give lots of praise at first when they do the right thing and slowly taper this off over time as the correct behavior increases. This will ensure that you are still maintaining the good behavior, but not overly exerting praise.

“How is praising a child any different than flattery?” – Sheldon
Flattery is described as insincere compliments and reinforcing can sometimes turn into this. My suggestion to avoid automated responses to good behavior is to try to compliment when you notice the behavior and when you think that a child is doing well. Varying the type of reinforcement given can help to prevent robotic responses as well. Give them sincere and enthusiastic praise to show that you value them and their choices.
