Learning Outcomes

Course Overview
For decades, author, poet, illustrator, and musician Shel Silverstein has created works of art that have resonated with adults and children alike. From his poems about imaginary creatures to a heartwarming book about a maternal relationship between a boy and a tree, Silverstein’s work provides countless opportunities to expand upon important early childhood educational concepts. This course will instruct participants on the benefits of these opportunities as well as lesson plans and practical suggestions to use them in an existing program.

  • Discuss the benefits of including Shel Silverstein works in their program.
  • State how poetry can support social and emotional development.
  • Explain how poetry can promote early literacy in an early childhood program.
  • Explain how poetry might benefit English Language Learners.

Meet the Trainer for this Course ​​​

Aurora is an approved Washington State STARS Trainer. 
​Aurora Tollestrup graduated from Grand Canyon University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and a minor in English. She has worked with children and families from preschool to seventh grade in public and private schools in her community as a teacher, advocate and volunteer. A strong community connection and working relationships with colleagues influenced her teaching practices and continue to inspire her work in Education. She believes that educators with a passion for the success and wellbeing of the children they work with need tremendous support and that is where her motivation comes from. ​​
Aurora is the Coordinator of Online Learning and Instructional Technology with Successful Solutions Training in Child Development.
