Learning Outcomes

Course Overview

American Sign Language is a common language used in the United States and Canada by members of the Deaf community. This course provides an introduction and overview of Deaf culture, characteristics of American Sign Language, and approximately 150 basic signs that are commonly used between children and caregivers. This course includes many videos and reflections, as well as helpful resources and reading material that will assist caregivers in including sign language elements in their programs.

  • Washington STARS credit: Program Planning and Development (10 hours)
  • CDA Content Area: Enhancement of Social and Emotional Development  (10 hours)
  • State the difference between Deaf and hard of hearing definitions
  • Identify common myths about Deaf culture
  • Describe the culture of the Deaf community
  • Identify and recall some commonly used signs
  • Explain the difference between signed English and American Sign Language
  • Identify correctly structured phrases in American Sign Language
  • Identify and select appropriate handshapes for some basic signs
  • List three ways to use American Sign Language in a classroom or child care program
  • State some helpful signs for classrooms and child care programs

Meet the Trainer for this Course ​

Aurora Tollestrup, BS Ed
Aurora is an approved Washington State STARS Trainer.Aurora Tollestrup graduated from Grand Canyon University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and a minor in English. She has worked with children and families from preschool to seventh grade in public and private schools in her community as a teacher, advocate and volunteer. A strong community connection and working relationships with colleagues influenced her teaching practices and continue to inspire her work in Education. She believes that educators with a passion for the success and wellbeing of the children they work with need tremendous support and that is where her motivation comes from.

Aurora is the Coordinator of Online Learning and Instructional Technology with Successful Solutions Training in Child Development.
