Stress is a physiological response to troubles and worries that arise in daily life. Whether the stress comes from work or personal matters, it is important to get some relief so that it does not eventually spiral out of control. Though it is difficult at times, it is imperative to consider your self-care before burnout occurs.

Some suggestions for stress relief:

Take a break. 
Allow yourself a break when things become overwhelming. If you cannot physically remove yourself from the situation, take a few moments to breathe deeply from your diaphragm.

Lie down. 
At times, a quick powernap or rest can reset your brain long enough to see things in a different light. If you can sneak in a 15 minute nap, you should. If you cannot, lay your head on your desk for a few moments, close your eyes, and relax.

Visualize. 
An escape from your reality isn’t always an option, but instead you can try a visualization exercise. Close your eyes, breathe slowly and visualize something that gives you joy. This could be snuggling with the family pet, a hobby, the thought of relaxing on a beach, and more.

Carve out some “me” time. 
Everyone needs some time to themselves to focus on who they are and where they are going. Do not neglect having time to yourself and consider it a priority in your life. Schedule it into your day if you need to, and do not put it off!

Get some air. 
Step outside for a few moments to get a breath of fresh air. If the weather permits, take a quick stroll and decompress.

Don’t try to fix everything. 
Sometimes stress can be caused by the simple feeling of not being in control. It is fine to accept that you cannot control or fix each and every problem that comes your way. The sooner you stop, the sooner your stress level will drop.

Journal. 
Maybe you are a big writer, maybe you are not. Keeping a notebook handy will give you the option to jot down the events from your day and put them away when you are done.

Focus on the positive. 
When the negativity begins to creep in, combat it with positivity! Smile, hold your head up, and “count your blessings” as they say.

Vent to somebody. 
Whether it is a spouse, friend, or animal it doesn’t matter. If you need to get it off your chest, it may be a therapeutic release to do so.
