Bilbo Baggins overcomes some major obstacles and in the end, comes out a changed person with life experience and something to share with others. This is indicative of the classic literary Hero’s Journey. Often the hero is an unlikely character who is reluctant to embark on the journey of self-discovery, which is definitely the case with Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit. Other literary works that utilize the Hero’s Journey involve a main character who is motivated to embark on their quest either by personal motivation or by some sort of threat or challenge.
The Hero’s Journey is a classic theme in many fictional works of literacy that brings the opportunity for teaching many important elements of fantasy fiction. Students can understand the framework of the tale, make predictions, relate to the events and characters and much more. It is an important lesson for school-age children to learn and recognize.
