Learning Outcomes

Course Overview
Maurice Sendak has delighted and entertained children with both his illustrations and written words where children are immersed in a world of dreams and imagination. Winner of several children’s literary awards, Sendak created and illustrated many books which can be used for many topics and purposes in the early childhood classroom. This course aims to educate the participant about his life and work as well as the use of his books for promoting creativity, teaching important life lessons and introducing fantasy and fairytale in the early childhood setting. Also included are sample lesson plan ideas that adhere to the CDA Competency Standards set by the CDA Council of Professional Recognition.

  • Washington STARS credit: Program Planning and Development (1 hour)
  • CDA Content Area: Enhancement of Social and Emotional Development  (1 hour)
  • Discuss Maurice Sendak's opinion of childhood and how it pertains to early childhood education
  • Explain the importance of several CDA Competency Standards in relationship to example lesson plans
  • Analyze sample lesson plans for several age groups
  • Discuss controversial literary bans on In The Night Kitchen by Maurice Sendak
  • Apply the elements of teaching fantasy and fairytale to an early childhood program
  • Apply the information regarding promoting creativity and teaching life lessons to an early childhood program

Meet the Trainer for this Course ​​​

Aurora is an approved Washington State STARS Trainer. 

​Aurora Tollestrup graduated from Grand Canyon University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and a minor in English. She has worked with children and families from preschool to seventh grade in public and private schools in her community as a teacher, advocate and volunteer. A strong community connection and working relationships with colleagues influenced her teaching practices and continue to inspire her work in Education. She believes that educators with a passion for the success and wellbeing of the children they work with need tremendous support and that is where her motivation comes from. ​​ 

Aurora is the Coordinator of Online Learning and Instructional Technology with Successful Solutions Training in Child Development.
