Why are Learning Centers Needed?

1) Learning centers appeal to children’s natural desire to explore.
Children are naturally curious creatures. Learning centers allow children to discover and investigate concepts and ideas. Centers create an entire classroom environment of curiosity that encourages children to ask questions and seek explanation.
|
2) Learning centers give students a safe place to take risks.
The focus of learning centers should be on the process of learning, rather than the final product. This allows children to really explore a concept, instead of being able to do something “right”. Here they can test what happens if they do something differently than expected, without fear of making mistakes.
|
3) Learning centers promote social skills.
During their time at centers, children will be given opportunities to interact with peers. Children that lack certain social skills can be placed at a center with other children that are more socially skilled, and learning through modeling can occur. Students will work together to complete tasks, for example building a tower at the block center. They will practice taking turns, communicating ideas, and listen to others.
|
4) Learning centers allow students to make decisions for themselves.
During free time, students will be able to choose what center they would like to play at. They can decide what part or role they want to be at centers like the dramatic play area. Learning centers encourage independence and decisiveness, skills that they will need as they enter grade-school.
